In Reply Dr Horowitz and colleagues highlight multiple risks associated with long-term benzodiazepine use, including dependence, tolerance, addiction, depression and anxiety, impaired cognitive functioning, falls, and motor vehicle crashes. We agree with these concerns. In our Viewpoint, we quoted the revised FDA boxed warning for benzodiazepines, which includes many of these hazards. Furthermore, we stated that "this increased caution regarding benzodiazepine use is warranted; fewer benzodiazepine prescriptions are needed." For these reasons, we respectfully disagree with their characterization of our Viewpoint.
